Rice Grist Mill
Norris, TN - Rice Grist Mill is located within Norris Dam State Park off Highway 441 and offers a glimpse of Tennessee history and cultural treasures. The 18th Century Rice Grist Mill was originally constructed in 1798 in Union County. The mill was later dismantled and rebuilt by TVA on Clear Creek in 1935, where it sits today.
The mill is a two-story log structure with a wooden water wheel. Water is channeled from the top of the wheel and pours over allowing the wheel to turn. Visitors can go inside and view the working internal gears that were carved from hickory. The main shaft was originally made from a white oak tree, and was replaced by TVA with a steel shaft. Upstairs visitors will find a small gift shop and can get a closer look at the water pouring of the wooden wheel.
